What is red diesel?
Red diesel is a rebated fuel with a reduced tax rate, permitted only for use within off-road vehicles and machinery and for heating non-commercial premises.
This fuel type is dyed red with chemical markers to distinguish it from standard white diesel, making it easier to identify during inspections and prosecute illegal use. It’s also often referred to under a variety of different names, including cherry juice, farm fuel, marked diesel, gas oil, and 35-second oil. The latter represents the viscosity of the fuel, measured during a standard flow test, which helps to distinguish it from thinner heating oils like kerosene.

Who can use red diesel?
Red diesel was originally introduced as a rebated fuel to help lower operating costs for critical sectors that do not rely on public infrastructure. However, entitlement tightened in 2022, driven largely by the UK government’s net zero ambitions.
Now, under Excise Notice 75, only the following vehicles, vessels, and uses qualify for red diesel in the UK (and only when used for permitted purposes):
- Agricultural, horticultural, forestry, and aquatic farming – including tractors, harvesters, and supporting machinery (snow ploughs, for example)
- Specialist off-road vehicles – such as digging machines, mobile cranes, road rollers, and works trucks, when used for qualifying land-based purposes
- Railway vehicles and plant – locomotives, rolling stock, and maintenance vehicles designed to run on a railway (including road-rail vehicles)
- Unlicensed vehicles – including vehicles with a statutory off road notification (SORN), but only when used off public roads for qualifying activities
- Grounds maintenance – vehicles and mowing machines used on golf courses or by community amateur sports clubs (CASC)
- Travelling fairs and circuses – vehicles and machinery used to operate and maintain equipment
- Boats and marine transport – all commercial vessels, except for private pleasure craft, which must operate under strict declaration and duty rules
- Non-commercial heating and power – generators and heating systems supplying premises not used for commercial purposes
In all cases, eligibility depends on both the type of machine/vehicle and exactly how it’s used, with strict restrictions on public road use and non-qualifying commercial activity. While red diesel suppliers can provide useful advice, organisations should always refer to HMRC for up-to-date guidance.

How much is red diesel?
Red diesel is not a static cost – prices fluctuate daily based on several key factors. Global oil markets are one of the most dominant influences, rising when demand outstrips supply, geopolitical tensions arise, or transportation challenges emerge. Changes in legislation or taxation can also influence the price, as well as local shifts in purchasing behaviours. Similarly, an emergency red diesel delivery will naturally incur more premium costs.
As agile and adaptive red diesel suppliers, we leverage our robust global supply network and strong regional buying power to maximise value for our customers against every backdrop. We always endeavour to remain competitive, and are committed to being honest and transparent, no matter what unfolds in the market.
