Fuel additives

Diesel fuel additives to protect business operations

Fuel additives play a vital role in maintaining fuel quality, protecting engines, and, ultimately, supporting operations across all commercial environments. Whether you’re powering agricultural machinery, commercial fleets, or industrial equipment, the right additive solution helps enhance fuel performance and reduces the risk of contamination or degradation – minimising downtime and business disruption.

For more than 15 years, we’ve supported organisations across Yorkshire and the north west with reliable products designed to keep sites running efficiently throughout every season. With dependable delivery, industry expertise, and an intricate understanding of regional commercial demands, we’re here to help, whatever the requirement.

If you’d like guidance on the right diesel fuel additive solution for your equipment or fuel storage requirements, get in touch with our experts.

What are fuel additives?

Fuel additives are specialist chemical treatments added to fuels like diesel to improve performance, stability, and efficiency. Widely used across the agricultural, industrial, and commercial sectors, they support cleaner combustion, protect engines, and reduce issues caused by fuel degradation, water contamination, and diesel bug.

Additives are specifically designed for different operational needs and include performance enhancers, stabilisers, anti-bacterial treatments, and solutions to protect against cold weather. For businesses where machinery reliability and uptime are critical – whether in certain seasons or year round – additives remain a vital part of proactive fuel management.

What are the different types of fuel additives?

The right fuel additive will depend on your operational needs, day-to-day challenges, and how fuel is stored and managed across your fleet. Different types of diesel fuel additive include:

  • Performance additives. Designed to improve combustion efficiency and support cleaner engine operation, these additives help reduce deposits within fuel systems while supporting more consistent machinery performance. Craggs Energy’s performance additives include Diesel Supreme to improve DERV efficiency, and Gas Oil Supreme, which allows engines calibrated on EN590 DERV to run on red diesel. Meanwhile, Diesel Power Restorer improves engine performance by breaking down deposits. Anti-Wax is also an ideal seasonal product that prevents wax crystals from forming, helping machinery run more reliably at low temperatures. And for emissions control, we supply AdBlue for SCR-equipped diesel vehicles and machinery.
  • Fuel stabilisers. This type of additive is used to maintain fuel quality during storage and ensures reduced degradation over time. Seasonal equipment – like tractors or combine harvesters, infrequently used fleets, and large tanks storing fuel for longer periods of time – will all benefit from fuel stabilisers.
  • Anti-bacterial treatments. These additives protect against microbial contamination, which typically occurs when water and fuel come into contact and create the perfect conditions for bacteria and fungi to grow rapidly. This is also known as ‘diesel bug’, and can lead to blocked filters, fuel system damage, and costly downtime. Our Anti-Bug additive protects from bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeast buildup that can so easily grind operations to a halt.
  • Water management additives. You can more easily manage moisture buildup within stored fuel with this water contamination treatment. Water management additives are ideal for long-term bulk storage, seasonal machinery inactivity, and in high-humidity or high-condensation environments. This type of additive reduces the risk of corrosion, protecting tanks, fuel lines, and engines. Commercial fuel additive Sludgebuster helps clear fuel tank sludge, extending the lifespan of storage tanks and machinery.
  • Diesel conditioner. A fuel additive designed to improve the performance, stability, and cleanliness of diesel fuel. Different products vary, but most diesel conditioners combine several functions in one treatment.

Do diesel fuel additives work?

Yes, and when used correctly, diesel additive benefits can be significant. They’re proven to enhance fuel performance, support cleaner combustion, and help protect engines operating in demanding commercial environments. For businesses where downtime due to disrupted operations can be extremely costly, choosing the right additive solution is crucial for long-term equipment reliability.

As well as improved combustion efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and protection against wear within fuel systems and engine components, a high-quality diesel fuel additive can also prevent issues such as diesel bug, sludge formation, and water contamination – all of which can impact machinery performance and increase maintenance costs.
